You do not need to quit your job to start something. You need a Saturday morning, an idea small enough to test, and the patience to let it be bad for a while. This is the unglamorous version, which is the one that works.
Start smaller than feels respectable
Not a brand. Not a platform. A thing you can make ten of, or a service you can sell twice. The first version should embarrass you slightly - that is how you know it shipped.
Small is not a compromise. Small is how you find out if anyone actually wants it before you spend real money.
Sell something in the first month
One sale teaches you more than six months of planning. Charge real money, even if it is a tenner. Free proves nothing - people will take anything for free.
The first customer is rarely a stranger. It is a friend of a friend, a former colleague, someone from a group you are already in. Tell people. That is the whole marketing plan at the start.
Protect the day job and the evenings
The side hustle runs on weekends and one weeknight. That is it. The moment it eats your sleep or your actual job, it stops being a side hustle and becomes a second, worse job.
Boring rules help: no client calls during work hours, no checking orders after 9pm, one full day off a week where the thing does not exist.
Know what you are actually testing
Will people pay for it? Can you make it without hating it? Does it still interest you on a wet Tuesday in February? Three questions, and the answers take about six months to arrive.
If the answers are yes, you have a runway, not a hobby. That is when the bigger decisions get easier.
The best side hustles look unimpressive for about a year. Then they do not. Start the small version this month and let the evidence build.
