The problem with most casual style advice for men over 40 is that it sounds like preparation for giving up. Wear a navy jumper. Buy safe jeans. Avoid anything interesting. No thanks. Casual does not have to mean invisible. It can still have edge, shape and direction.
The new casual wardrobe
The modern casual wardrobe is built around pieces that do more than one job.
You need heavyweight tees, relaxed trousers, straight-leg denim, hoodies with structure, overshirts, clean trainers and one or two pieces with actual point of view.
That is enough to start.
Outfit formula 1
Heavyweight black tee + relaxed trousers + clean trainers.
Simple. Sharp. Works almost anywhere. Add a jacket if needed. Keep the colours tight. Let the fit do the work.
Outfit formula 2
Graphic tee + cargo trousers + overshirt.
This is the easiest way to bring in streetwear without looking like you are trying too hard.
The graphic gives energy. The overshirt gives structure. The cargos give movement.
Outfit formula 3
White oversized tee + straight denim + suede trainers.
A classic, but better when the tee has proper weight. Roll the sleeves if needed. Add a watch, jacket or overshirt. Done.
Outfit formula 4
Hoodie + long coat + straight-leg trousers.
This works because of contrast. The hoodie is relaxed. The coat sharpens it. The trousers stop it becoming gym wear.
Outfit formula 5
Graphic tee + black jeans + boots or trainers.
An easy evening version. Keep the graphic strong but not childish. Keep the jeans clean. Let the outfit feel lived-in, not overbuilt.
What to avoid
Avoid trying to look younger, dressing like every other dad at the pub, novelty prints, overly tight jeans, dead trainers and anything that feels like a costume.
You do not need more clothes. You need better signals.
Not done yet is a dress code.
